How I started

Before 2022, fashion was pretty much an afterthought for me. My wardrobe was filled with basic items—shirts and boy shorts—just for comfort. Style? It wasn’t on my radar. 😅

But everything changed in 2022. New friendships introduced me to the world of fashion, and suddenly, I was paying more attention to my wardrobe. I started experimenting with different looks, but I faced a challenge: I often tried to copy styles I admired without considering how to adapt them to fit my own body and taste. 😔 I’d see a trendy outfit and hope it would work for me, without much thought about customization.

This approach was more discouraging than I expected. I was never quite satisfied with how I looked, always feeling like I was chasing a moving target. 😕

Through this journey, I learned a crucial lesson: fashion isn’t about copying trends; it’s about expressing yourself. I realized that true satisfaction comes from making styles your own. By focusing on what made me feel confident and comfortable, I began to embrace my personal style and find joy in my wardrobe choices. ✨

Now that I’ve found my fashion groove, I’m excited to share my journey and the strategies that helped me transform my style. I’ll be discussing how I changed and offering tips on how you can do the same, so you too can discover confidence and satisfaction in your own fashion journey. 💃

About Me

I’m 157 cm tall and currently weigh 48 kg, having lost weight from 52 kg between 2022 and 2024. I have a rectangle body shape and natural dark brown hair, complemented by a slightly tanned, neutral skin tone and dark brown eyes. This journey of transformation has influenced my approach to fashion, allowing me to embrace and enhance my unique features.

What Changed?

Stop copying outfits/advice blindly

When I first started caring about fashion, I made the mistake of trying to copy other people’s outfits and styles, thinking it would automatically work for me. While it’s great to get inspiration from others, I’ve learned that you shouldn’t follow their style directly.

For example, when I searched for what to wear for rectangle body types, the clothes recommended weren’t always what I liked or found flattering. Just because something is suggested doesn’t mean it’s right for you. I recommend taking tips from websites but not following them blindly, especially if you don’t feel confident in the recommended styles. Trust me, confidence is just as important as the outfit itself.

I also discovered that trying on clothes before committing to them is crucial. This way, I can see how they fit and feel, ensuring they actually work for me. I recommend that you do the same—visit physical stores to try on outfits and see what flatters you before purchasing it online at a cheaper price.

Pricing and Quality of clothes

Speaking of price, I’ve also come to understand that quality always outweighs quantity. Even if you don’t have much money, I advise buying one good piece rather than five bad ones that you probably won’t even wear after one time. Investing in reliable, good-quality pieces will serve you better in the long run, both in style and durability.

Colours that suit your style and skin tone

Choosing colors that complement your style and skin tone is essential for creating outfits that feel authentic and look great. For a long time, I thought blue was my color simply because I liked it. But as I experimented more with my style, particularly with streetwear, I realized that blue didn’t suit my neutral skin tone or the vibe I was going for. Through trial and error, I discovered that green and brown worked much better for me, even though they weren’t colors I initially liked.

I wasn’t a fan of green or brown at first, but I learned how to style them in a way that felt true to me and aligned with my streetwear aesthetic. It’s important to remember that sometimes the colors you’re naturally drawn to might not be the best fit for your look or skin tone. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try different shades—you might be surprised by what actually works.

When finding the right colors, focus on what complements your skin tone and enhances your style. For me, green and brown have become staples in my wardrobe, even though they weren’t my first choice. The key is to experiment and find what looks and feels right to you. Confidence in your outfit is just as important as the colors you choose.

Fear

I used to always stick to streetwear because it was what I knew looked good on me, based on my hair and personal taste. Streetwear felt safe and familiar, so I rarely ventured into other styles. However, I’ve recently learned that it’s good to experiment with different styles and not limit yourself just because you’ve found something that works. Don’t cut off other styles just because you’ve found one that suits you—there’s no need to be afraid of having multiple styles.

Right now, I mix it up with old money, streetwear, athleisure, and grunge. Each style brings out a different side of me, and exploring these different aesthetics has made fashion more exciting and versatile for me. So, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. You might find that embracing multiple styles gives you more freedom to express yourself and keeps your wardrobe fresh.
